Richard Gray Stevenson III, DDS, FAGD, FACD, ABOD

Dr.Stevenson received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from UCLA in 1982 and his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the UCLA School of Dentistry in 1986.  After practicing general dentistry for 7 years in Laguna Niguel, California, he accepted a full-time teaching position at the UCLA School of Dentistry, as an Assistant Professor in the Section of Operative Dentistry.  For four years he served as the Chair of the Pre-Clinical Operative Dentistry Course where he authored a comprehensive illustrated syllabus of Operative Dentistry.  Dr. Stevenson has been recognized by his students on six occasions as the Teacher of the Year and has received numerous additional teaching awards from twenty-six different classes of students.  He also received the UCLA Academic Senate Distinguished Lecturer Award for Non-Senate Faculty in 2003.

In 2009, he received the American Dental Association’s Distinguished “Golden Apple” Teaching Award – in both the pre-doctoral and post-doctoral categories.  In 2005, Dr. Stevenson received a Fellowship in Medical Education from the UCLA School of Medicine.  He has over published over 30 articles on dental materials, the principles of evidence-based dentistry, and restorative techniques in peer reviewed Journals, including Operative Dentistry, Evidenced-based Dentistry and The Journal of Esthetics and Restorative Dentistry.  He is the co-author of a book chapter on Cast Gold Restorations in Summitt’s Fourth Edition of “Fundamentals of Operative Dentistry”, a chapter on Implant Occlusion in the “Implants in the Esthetic Zone”, and the chapter on “Complications in Restorative Dentistry: Best Practices”. He has authored numerous syllabi, guides, and instructional guides in all aspects of restorative dentistry for UCLA and other schools.

He is the inventor of the RGS Instruments – a series of 4 calibration adjuncts to assist students and dentists with evaluating preparation parameters. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Operative Dentistry and the ADA Professional Product Review.  Dr. Stevenson is a member of numerous dental organizations.  Since 2008, he has been the Secretary of the Academy of Operative Dentistry where he previously was an Executive Councilor, then President and Assistant Secretary.  He is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and the American College of Dentists.  Dr. Stevenson has been a charter member and past President of the Orange County R.V. Tucker Cast Gold Study Club since 1992 and has demonstrated cast and direct gold techniques internationally at both the Academy of R.V. Tucker Study Clubs and the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators annual meetings.

In 2003, Dr. Richard V. Tucker appointed Dr. Stevenson as a mentor of the Los Angeles Cast Gold Study Club, where he continues to mentor today.  Additionally, Dr. Stevenson has mentored five other Cast Gold Study Clubs, one in Hawaii, two in Peru, one to the pre-doctoral UCLA students and one in Tokyo, Japan.  Dr. Stevenson was the Secretary of the Academy of R.V. Tucker Cast Gold Study Club for six years, until 2011.  Dr. Stevenson served as a lecturer and instructor in the UCLA Aesthetic Continuum, the Surgical and Restorative Implant Continuum, and has led numerous hands-on esthetic sessions for visiting academics and study groups at UCLA and abroad.  Dr. Stevenson has given over 500 continuing education presentations and table clinics in restorative dentistry internationally including the Philippines, Peru, Japan, China, Korea and Canada. In February 2007, Dr. Stevenson became the 58th Board Certified Operative Dentist of the American Board of Operative Dentistry.  In 2006, he was inducted as a member in the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry.

In 2008 he received the Richard V. Tucker Award, this Academy’s highest honor.  In 2010 he was the recipient of the Award of Excellence from the Academy of Operative Dentistry. In 2011, he was named the UCLA School of Dentistry Alumnus of the Year in recognition of his outstanding contributions to organized dentistry, the school, the community and the UCLA Dental Alumni Association.  Dr. Stevenson is currently Professor Emeritus of Clinical Dentistry and served as Chair of the Division of Restorative Dentistry, with over 100 faculty members for 17 years.  He has made numerous instructional videos in restorative dentistry techniques including ceramic inlays and onlays, dental materials, impressions and dental photography – these videos have been viewed by hundreds of thousands of dentists internationally. His YouTube channel has over 71,000 subscribers where he received over 5 million views. He practices dentistry in West Los Angeles and San Dimas with a focus on Microscope, Implant Restoration and Esthetic Dentistry.  In 2015, he started Stevenson Dental Solutions, a hands-on teaching institute and Master Milling Center, a dental laboratory in 2014.  He lives in San Dimas, CA with his wife Savi.
